Reese named general manager of Bayhawks

Brian Reese, who has been with the Denver Outlaws since their Major League Lacrosse inception in 2006, was named general manager of the Chesapeake Bayhawks on Friday, effective next month. Reese resigned as the Outlaws' GM this month and served as the team's coach from 2007 through 2010, going 30-12. During his six-year career with Denver, the team had a winning record and clinched a playoff berth each season. Reese was an MLL defenseman for the Bayhawks from 2001 to 2004 and was a member of the 2002 championship team. A Baltimore resident, he serves as a volunteer coach for the Maryland women's team.

'Solo' not in crowded field for Md. Million Classic

There are 164 pre-entries (151 horses as 13 were cross-entered) for the 11 races being run at the Jim McKay Maryland Million next Saturday at Laurel Park, track officials announced Friday. First post will be at 12:35 p.m. The post-position draw for the $1.05 million day will be held at noon Wednesday. A field of eight could compete in the $150,000 Maryland Million Classic but not defending champion Regal Solo, who has been nominated to the $100,000 Maryland Million Sprint. The field is expected to include multiple stakes winner Eighttofasttocatch, the second-, third- and fourth-place finishers from the 2010 Classic (Not Abroad, Regal Warrior and In The Juice), 2009 Classic winner Sumacha'hot, who missed last year's race with a minor leg injury, and 2009 Nursery champion Toboggan Slide from the powerful Graham Motion barn. Overall, 14 previous Million day winners are nominated. Blind Date ($100,000 Distaff), Sweet Nenana ($100,000 Ladies), Pocket Patch ($100,000 Turf) and Ben's Cat ($100,000 Turf Sprint) are expected to attempt to defend titles.

Report: Better Talk Now in critical condition

Five-time Grade I winner Better Talk Now, based in Fair Hill, is in critical condition after developing a gastrointestinal problem, BloodHorse.com reported. Veterinarians at the New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, Pa., are "cautiously optimistic" the 12-year-old gelding will make a full recovery, Sue Kenny, office manager of Motion's Herringswell Stables, said, according to the website. The son of Talkin Man was taken from Fair Hill Training Center to New Bolton on Tuesday but as of Friday had shown signs of improvement. "Better Talk Now has a gastrointestinal problem that does not allow normal function of his esophagus and small intestine," Kenny wrote on the Herringswell Stables website. "This problem has led to a continuous amount of gastric fluid built up over the last 48 hours and severe reflux, which in turn has led to pneumonia from inhalation of the reflux."
