Moheyer tops Chang in 1st round of Mid-Amateur
John Moheyer (Maryland) of Baltimore, who had rallied on the back nine to win three holes in a row and go 2-up, saw his advantage slip to 1 up, before a final birdie at the par-3 17th enabled him to get by Jimmy Chang of San Marino, Calif., 2 and 1, in the first round of the 31st U.S. Mid-Amateur championship at the Shadow Hawk Golf Club in suburban Houston, Texas.
More golf: Serge Hogg of Baltimore, 5-down after No. 11, rallied to win three of the next four holes, before Anthony Barrera, San Jose, Calif., closed him out, 3 and 2. Tucker Sampson of Chevy Chase and Caves Valley GC, 77-72, lost out in a 20-for-3 playoff at 149. Others faiing to advance were Will Shriver, Baltimore, 78-73—150, and Larry Storck, Parkville, 78-78156. … In the 25th U.S. Women's Mid-Am at Bayville Golf Club in Virginia Beach, Va., Christy Larrimore, Baltimore (75-80—155) and Andrea Kraus, Pikesville, 84-78—162, advanced to match but had first-round matches halted by darkness.
