Ovechkin to throw out first pitch at Friday's game

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the Orioles' 7:05 p.m. home game Friday against the Angels. The Capitals will play their first preseason game at the Baltimore Hockey Classic on Tuesday vs. Nashville at 1st Mariner Arena.

More Capitals: The team will begin training camp at Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Va., on Saturday. Camp will last 19 days with the regular season beginning Oct. 6. All on-ice sessions will be open to the public and free of charge.

Loyola men strike early in 2-1 victory over Towson

The Loyola men's soccer team scored two early goals to earn a 2-1 victory over visiting Towson (0-2-1) on Wednesday evening at Ridley Athletic Complex. Loyola took a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute when Stephen Dooley scored on a penalty kick. Junior Gerwyn Jones then gave the Greyhounds (3-1-1) a 2-0 advantage in the eighth minute after a deflection on a free kick.

More men's college soccer: Visiting Delaware (3-0-1) scored the final two goals of the contest to take a wild 5-3 decision over Navy (1-3-2).

Women's college soccer: Senior forward Brooke Piper scored with 5:34 remaining, but UMBC (0-7-0) fell, 2-1, to Saint Joseph's (2-3-2).

College football: McDaniel sophomore running back Joe Rollins (Surrattsville) and junior safety Tim McLister were honored as the Beyond Sports College Network Football Athletes of the Week. Rollins was also named Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week and to the D3football.com Team of the Week. Senior teammate Sam Cox (Towson) also was named to the D3football.com team. … Johns Hopkins senior linebacker Ryan Piatek was named Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

Towson men's basketball: Contests against six teams that reached the 2011 NCAA tournament highlight the 2011-12 schedule. The Tigers will open the season in the Maui Invitational with games at Kansas (Nov. 11), Michigan (Nov. 14), Belmont (Nov.19) and either UNC Greensboro or Middle Tennessee State (Nov. 20). The Tigers open their home schedule against Oregon State on Nov. 26.

Towson women's basketball: Road games against Connecticut and Maryland highlight the 2011-12 schedule. The Tigers open the season Nov. 12 when they travel to Western Kentucky for the first-ever meeting between the two schools, then visit Maryland on Nov. 16. The Tigers make their home debut Nov. 19 when they host Canisius, the first of three straight home games for the Tigers, who also play in-state rivals Mount St. Mary's (Nov. 22) and UMBC (Nov. 27).

Women's college lacrosse: Two UMBC players who graduated in May — Kristen Milligan (Chesapeake) and Natalie Rau (Fallston) — were named to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Academic Honor Roll. Also honored were Mount St. Mary's senior Meaghan Conlon (Liberty) and graduates Aly Jost (Bel Air) and Alexis Salerno.

Men's college golf: Ryan Triller (North Harford) finished 32nd to lead Mount St. Mary's to 10th place at the Maryland Intercollegiate.

Lacrosse: Gary Gait, who was player-coach of the Baltimore Bayhawks for four years and an assistant coach for the Maryland women's lacrosse team for nine seasons, and his brother Paul were inducted into the British Columbia Sports Hall of Fame on Tuesday. The Gaits led Syracuse to three consecutive national championships from 1988 to 1990; Gary now coaches the Orange women's lacrosse team.

Golf: Bobby Morris of Congressional Country Club overcame a four-stroke deficit Wednesday in the closing nine holes, then parred the first extra hole to win the 83rd Senior Amateur championship of the Maryland State Golf Association at Worthington Manor Golf Club in Urbana. Morris (74-72—146), 64, who won the event for a third time, was joined in the playoff by defending champion Mike Occi of Cattail Creek CC (74-72—146) and two-time champion Joe Records of Baltimore CC (73-73—146). Henry Blue of Green Spring Valley Hunt Club finished one shot out of the playoff with 76-71 (low round of the day)—147. Lisa Schlesinger of Laytonsville made it to the semifinals of the U.S. Senior Women's championship at Ooltewah, Tenn., where she lost to Terri Frohnmayer of Salem, Ore., on the 20th hole. Schlesinger who lost to a par on the second hole, was down from the fifth to the 15th hole in regulation before squaring the match with a par at the 16th. Earlier, the Norbeck Country Club member had defeated Mary Jane Hiestand, Naples, Fla., 2 and 1, in the quarterfinals. Frohnmayer will face Mina Hardin in Thursday's scheduled 18-hole final.

Pro basketball: Hyattsville native Naurice Mullings, who played at Cecil College, was signed by the Bay Area Shuckers of the Atlantic Coast Professional Basketball League.
