No. 2 Maryland routs No. 8 BC in men's soccer, 4-0
The No. 2 Maryland men's soccer team passed its first conference test Friday night with a 4-0 rout of No. 8 Boston College at Ludwig Field. Sophomore Patrick Mullins scored twice and goalkeeper Will Swaim secured his third shutout of the season as the Terrapins outshot the Eagles 18-4. Coach Sasho Cirovski, who was honored before the game for earning his 300th win Sunday against Radford, has led the Terps to their first 5-0 start since 2004.
Women's basketball: Maryland is ranked 11th in the Sporting News 2011-12 preseason poll. The Terps return four of five starters from last year's team that finished the season 24-8 overall and fourth in the ACC regular season. The Terps, who return five starters from last season's 24-8 squad, are one of five Atlantic Coast Conference teams in the rankings, joining Duke at No. 6, Miami at No. 10, Florida State at No. 14 and North Carolina at No. 17. Notre Dame is No. 1.
Calvert Hall's Moore will leave after season
Calvert Hall boys soccer coach Andy Moore announced Friday that this will be his final season coaching the Cardinals. Moore has been with the program for 20 years, the past 14 as head coach. In his time as head coach, Moore has a 162-82-26 record with Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championships in 2002 and 2003. In 2002, the Cardinals went 18-0 in league play to become the first MIAA team to complete a perfect conference season. Moore cited spending more time with his family as the primary reason for stepping down. He has three children who all play soccer — Emma, 13; Grace, 11; and Peter, 9. Moore will continue to teach at the school.
Football: Two Dunbar (D.C.) players have been issued one-game suspensions for their roles in a fight that ended last Saturday night's game against Dunbar (Baltimore) at the I-95 Kickoff Classic, according to The Washington Post. The fight began after an onside kick with 4:33 remaining in the Poets' 22-8 victory over the Crimson Tide. Players from both teams ran to the scene, and fans began flooding from the stands at Morgan State's Hughes Stadium. Officials ruled to end the game at that point. "When we looked at the videotape, their behavior was not that of a student-athlete at Dunbar," Dunbar (D.C.) athletic director Johnnie Walker told the Post, adding that those players were the most aggressive in throwing punches during the melee. The suspensions will be served during today's game against Southern Durham (N.C.). Walker declined to identify the players suspended, citing student confidentiality.
Fogelsonger, Karamanos back as Laurel meet opens
The 68-day Laurel Park fall meeting opened Friday with the return of two familiar faces to the Maryland jockey colony. Ryan Fogelsonger and Horacio Karamanos first arrived on the scene in 2002 and combined to win nearly 1,700 races and 11 riding titles at Laurel and Pimlico Race Course. Karamanos, who had back surgery last December, rode Service for Ten ($15.20) to victory in the third race, his first win of the year. The Argentina native now has 780 trips to the winners' circle at the major Maryland tracks. Fogelsonger, the Eclipse Award winner for outstanding apprentice rider in 2002, has not been healthy for five years, battling back and shoulder injuries. He had two races on the opening card. Abel Castellano and Malcolm Franklin rode two winners Friday. Franklin won aboard Star Money in the fifth and Love Those Boots in the sixth. Castellano was victorious with Kitty City in the second and Trapezium Star in the eighth.
Kayaking: Caroline Queen, 19, of Darnestown helped the United States earn a 2012 Olympic spot by finishing 37th after two opening heats of the ICF Slalom World Championships this week in Bratislava, Slovakia. The specific athlete who will fill the Olympic slot will be determined at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. "Caroline improved a lot this year and I'm looking forward to another big jump next year," U.S. Slalom national team coach Silvan Poberaj said.
