Margaret Amanda Ekua Anuah Abbey, daughter of Dr. Annie Walker-Abbey and Dr. Augustus Abbey, of Columbia, has been named an Ervin Scholar at Washington University in St. Louis. Abbey, a 2011 graduate of Howard High School, will enter Washington University this fall.

While in high school, Abbey volunteered at the Harmony Hall Assisted Living and Retirement Home as a pianist and kitchen and dining room aid. She was chairwoman of the Ebenezer Methodist Church Methodist Youth Fellowship, in Hyattsville.

The Ervin Scholars Program awards scholarships to incoming first-year students who demonstrate exceptional intellectual and leadership achievements, and who have shown a commitment to community service and bringing diverse people together. Scholars are actively involved in the Washington University community and continue the legacy of the late John B. Ervin on campus.

The Ervin scholarship is renewable for all four years of undergraduate study.

Almaz Abraham, of Laurel, is the recipient of the 2011 Morgan-Keller GNA Scholarship Programto further her education as a Geriatric Nurse Assistant. She has been employed with Morningside House of Laurel since 2005. Abraham is currently employed as the Lead CNA/Resident Aide in the Dementia Care department. The Morgan-Keller GNA Scholarship Program is awarded annually by the Beacon Institute, of Columbia, Mid-Atlantic Lifespan, and Morgan-Keller to further education amongst eligible members of Mid-Atlantic Lifespan.
