Pupils finally beginning their school year at George Washington… (Kim Hairston, Baltimore…)
Officials in the Baltimore area expect all schools to be open for students Tuesday, although Baltimore County will make its announcement on school openings Monday afternoon after officials make sure the power is restored.
Thirteen schools remained closed Friday morning in Baltimore County in the wake of Hurricane Irene, the most of any area school system.
But by late Friday afternoon, Phyllis Reese, a spokeswoman for the system, said only five schools remained without power, and Baltimore Gas & Electric Co. officials have said all power should be restored by Tuesday morning.
Anne Arundel County school officials said Friday that all county schools will be up and running when classes resume after Labor Day. Schools spokesman Bob Mosier said Friday that Marley Glen School in Glen Burnie was the last to have power restored.
Baltimore City officials said its lone school without power, Guilford Elementary/Middle, still had not had power restored as of 5 p.m. Friday. Officials said it might take a couple of days before power is fully restored.
In Anne Arundel, even the school system's Riva Road offices and, as a result, its email server, were affected by Hurricane Irene. At 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, the school system had 22 schools without power.
"We're pleased that we finally got up and running all of our facilities," Anne Arundel school system spokesman Bob Mosier said. "Our operations and technology crews did an outstanding job the day after [the hurricane] and the ensuing days just getting everything back on line.
"The time it took BGE to get the schools back up was understandably frustrating," Mosier continued. "But they did a great job and deserve a lot of credit. These things take time."
BGE said it's on track to finish restoring power to all customers affected by Hurricane Irene by Saturday.
The final day of BGE's efforts will focus reconnecting 5,000 to 10,000 customers who have been without power since Sunday.
