Whether it’s a sprained ankle, pinkeye, bronchitis or poison ivy, a new walk-in pediatric clinic in Columbia specializes in the needs of kids.
KinderMender opened its doors in the Columbia Crossing Shopping Center in July, under the direction of Dr. Keyvan Rafei. The Columbia resident is the outgoing chief of pediatric emergency medicine and chairman of the pediatric asthma program at the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital. He decided to open the new center as a way of “combining quality pediatric care with convenience and accessibility of urgent care,” he says.
“We have all the services under one roof,” Rafei says of his center, which houses physicians, a laboratory and X-ray services for children with non-life threatening medical problems.
Rafei says his center was designed to make families feel comfortable.
“It’s important in medical and health care — how you make people feel and how they feel afterwards,” Rafei says.
The interior design of the center includes a 200-foot garden-scale train that scootches along the perimeter of the facility to engage the children and family during visits.
KinderMender has an on-site pharmacy capable of filling basic prescriptions like antibiotics and pain relievers.
The clinic, which serves patients up to the age of 21, is open daily from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
