Orioles notes: Gonzalez finally pitching well late in games

As O's career nears possible end, lefty reliever is playing up to original expectations

The Orioles likely will need to make at least two changes to the 40-man roster to make room for Thursday's call-ups. Rick VandenHurk and Jeremy Accardo, two pitchers who could join the team when rosters expand, are not on the 40-man roster. … The following Orioles prospects have been named to the Arizona Fall League's Mesa Solar Sox roster: Infielder-outfielder L.J. Hoes, outfielder Xavier Avery, first baseman Joe Mahoney, catcher Ryan Ward and pitchers Sean Gleason and Chorye Spoone (Northeast). … Don Wakamatsu, who was rumored to be in the running to become Showalter's bench coach before the season, is the acting manager for the Blue Jays during this three-game series as manager John Farrell recovers from pneumonia. Wakamatsu was on Showalter's staff with the Texas Rangers from 2003 to 2006. Tuesday was their first time managing against each other. … First baseman Chris Davis (shoulder) threw and took 25 swings off a tee Tuesday without experiencing pain. … Infielder Cesar Izturis (groin) is expected to go on a rehabilitation assignment Friday. … Jason Berken's wife, Emily, gave birth to a girl, Hadley Lane, at 12:04 p.m. Tuesday. She weighs 5 pounds, 12 ounces. … Orioles broadcasters Joe Angel, Jim Hunter and Gary Thorne are among 75 candidates for the ballot for the 2012 Ford C. Frick Award for excellence in broadcasting. Fan voting will determine three of 10 finalists for the award; fans can vote at facebook.com/baseballhall. Results of fan voting will be announced Oct. 5, and the award winner will be announced Dec. 6 at baseball's winter meetings.
