An elderly man died in a fatal fire in Monkton early Tuesday morning, according to a Baltimore County Fire spokesman.

The fire was reported at 12:25 a.m. in the 1700 block of Big Falls Road, said the spokesman, Fire Specialist Jay Ringgold. Officials identified the victim as William Harrison Smith, 80.

Crews arrived to find a two-story wood-frame building with heavy fire in the front on both floors, he said.

The firefighters did a primary search and found the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene, Ringgold said.

Because of the rural location of the fire, firefighters had to set up a tanker strike team to shuttle in water, he said.

The cause is still under investigation, he said. No further information was available.
