The Western Howard County Force youth travel teams will have tryouts in September for the upcoming winter season for the girls and boys fourth through eighth grade teams. Teams are forming to represent Howard County in the Baltimore Tennis Patrons Junior Indoor Tennis League. There are four divisions, and boys and girls, grades four through 12, are welcome. Play runs October through March on weekends only.
New player evaluations will be held 6-8:30 p.m., Sept. 15 and 2:30-5:30 p.m., Sept. 18, at the Owen Brown Tennis Club, in Columbia. Players only need to come to one session but need to come ready to hit tennis balls.

Special Olympics Howard County is in need of soccer coaches. The 2011 season runs from late August through October. Practices are held twice a week on Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons.
Training will be provided. All new coaches must attend a volunteer orientation Sept. 11 at 1:30 p.m.
Special Olympics is a year-round sports training and athletic competition program for children and adults who have intellectual disabilities.

The Spitfire Field Hockey Club will continue tryouts for its winter indoor U-16 and U-19 tournament teams Sept. 11 from 3-5 p.m. at the Garrison Forest School. Cost: $25. The Spitfire plays in local and national tournaments from November through March.
The club also offers fall preseason indoor skills training for U-12 and U-14 boys and girls. Younger teams tryouts are in late October.

The second annual Valley Mede Fun Run and 5k CureSearch race will be held Sept. 5 in Cypressmede Park, Ellicott City. The race, which starts at 9:15 a.m., will benefit CureSearch, an organization that supports children's cancer research.
