A 25-year-old man was in critical condition after he was shot in the chest Sunday afternoon by a masked assailant in northwest Baltimore, police said.

After the victim was shot, he flagged down a passing Northwestern District officer in a police cruiser in the 5400 block of Reisterstown Road, and the officer summoned medical help. The victim, whose name police did not release, was transported to an area hospital, where he immediately underwent emergency surgery, police said.

The suspect who shot the man was not caught. Police described him as wearing a mask over the bottom of his face, a white shirt and blue jeans, police said.
