Tea party could learn from 'The Help'

August 22, 2011

After seeing the new movie "The Help," it struck me what a timely reminder the film is of the struggle for civil rights and the delicate, still relevant issue of race in America.

I've grown so tired of hearing conservatives say, "you guys only support Obama because he's black."

It's true that many African-Americans support President Obama because he is black. However, we also know that he is a good and decent man doing the best he can under the most adverse conditions imaginable.

I wish conservatives and tea party members would see "The Help." Maybe the brutal and humiliating images of how blacks were once treated would clarify for them why we love President Obama and want him to succeed.

But I know this is not going to happen. Such people are so blinded by their venomous hatred for President Obama they would much rather spend their time watching "Faux" News and listening to people like Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin spew their venomous rhetoric.
