A man and a woman are dead after the man's van crossed the mid-line of Solomons Island Road in Lothian, police said.

The head-on crash took place just before 6 p.m. near Solitude Court, said a Thursday evening statement by the Anne Arundel County Police Department.

Annapolis resident Robert Leslie Lynch, 57, was headed north when he crossed the yellow double-line and hit Angela Astin, 47, of Chesapeake Beach in her sedan, which was traveling in the southbound lane, police said.

Both Lynch and Astin, who were traveling alone in their vehicles, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police do not yet know what caused the man to drift across the median. Speed is not believed to have been a factor, police said, and it is still being investigated if alcohol played a role in the crash.

The road had been shut down for the investigation, which is ongoing.
