Ice hockey

The Howard Huskies new Cross-Ice Program starts Aug. 29 and runs through February. The program is for ages 8 and under and there are three on-ice sessions a week. Cost: $395. Free loaner equipment is available. Go to http://www.howardhuskies.org.

Field hockey

The Spitfire Field Hockey Club will hold tryouts for its winter indoor U-16 and U-19 tournament teams Aug. 21 and Sept. 11 from 3- 5 p.m. at Garrison Forest School. Cost: $25. Spitfire plays in local and national tournaments from November through March.

The club also offers fall preseason indoor skills training for U-12 and U-14 boys and girls. Younger teams tryouts are in late October.

Running

The 8th annual Knights of Columbus 10k run is scheduled for Sept. 3, starting at 8 a.m. at the Shrine of St. Anthony, 12290 Folly Quarter Road, Ellicott City. This annual charity race is organized by the Knights of Columbus St. Louis the King Council #11898 of St. Louis Parish and helps support local charities, including the Arc of Howard County and FISH of Howard County. Bullseye Running is hosting a 9k Around the Fairway, a new fun event running the golf cart path at the Timbers at Troy golf course with a brunch in the clubhouse to follow. Go to http://www.bullseyerunning.com.

The CrossLife Community Church is sponsoring a Summer's End 5k Family Run/Walk, Sept. 18 at 8 a.m. Cost: $20 per person, $10 for children under 12; $40 (families of four or more). All of the proceeds will benefit the Elkridge Food Pantry. Go to summersend5k.org.

The Howard County Junior Striders cross country program registration is available at http://www.striders.net or http://www.bullseyerunning.com. Practices will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays for eight weeks at Centennial High School beginning Aug. 30. Beginners and experienced runners from first through eighth grade are welcome.

Cheerleading

Cheerleading tryouts for open spots on Maryland Marlins All-Stars will be held Aug. 25, from 6-7 p.m. There are 12 teams are available for ages 4 and up. Email supersquads@hughes.net or call 410-796-2244.

Softball

The Western Howard County Fever girls fastpitch travel program continue tryouts for all age levels in August at Western Regional Park, field 3. The Fever will field eight teams. The tryout dates are:

10-U: 3-5:30 p.m., Aug. 28.

12-U: 12:30 p.m.-3, Aug. 28.

14-U: 12:30-3 p.m., Aug. 21.

16-U: 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Aug. 21 and 28.

18-U: 12:30-3 p.m., Aug. 20 and 21.

Registration is open for ages 5-17 for the HCYP girls fastpitch fall season. This is an instructional program for 8-U, 10-U and 12-U players and includes a competitive older league primarily for high school players not playing year-round but looking toward spring tryouts. Flag football

The Bulldog Flag Football League is registering teams and individuals for its season which runs from Sept. 18-Dec. 18, including post-season and tournament games. The leagues plays on Sundays in Baltimore, Howard and Anne Arundel counties. The league offers 9-man and 8-man IE ($500 plus officials fees) and 5-man ($350 plus officials fees). Baseball

The Savage 8-U travel team is holding practices for players interested in trying out for the 2012 squad. Practices will be held on Tuesdays from 5:45–7:45 p.m. and Saturdays from 9-11 a.m. at Savage Park, field 4. E-mail andrewjperlin@gmail.com prior to attending your first practice.

The Elkridge Hurricane travel teams will hold tryouts Aug. 20, 21, 27 and 28 at Rockburn Branch Park, Howard and Long Reach high schools.
