Open house

The Kinetics Dance Theatre will hold an open house for fall registration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at 3280 Pine Orchard Lane in Ellicott City. Visitors can take sample classes, observe an open rehearsal, consult with teachers and staff, purchase dance wear, and register for fall classes. Among classes offered are modern dance, ballet, jazz, tap, musical theater and creative dance. Specialty classes in pilates, yoga, Zumba, and Afro-Caribe are also offered. 10K run

The annual Knights of Columbus 10K Run will take place at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, at the Shrine of St. Anthony, 12290 Folly Quarter Road in Ellicott City. Event helps to support local charities, including the Arc of Howard County. Other activities include music, food, a snowball stand, prizes, post race massages by Howard County Chiropractic Spine & Sports Rehabilitation and a moonbounce. Charity golf event

The annual Lisbon Open, sponsored by the men of Lisbon United Methodist Church, will be held Sept. 27 at the Whiskey Creek Golf Club in Ijamsville. Proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society and flood and tornado victims. Cost is $150 per person. Auditions

Volunteers

The county Legacy Leadership Institute for the Environment is recruiting for the 2012 Class of Legacy Leaders.

The program is designed for people 50 and older who want to gain skills and knowledge and create a legacy through their volunteer work with partner organizations. Six weeks of classes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays begin Feb. 1. After completion on March 14, Legacy Leaders begin 150 hours of field placement with partner organizations from March-September.

Classes meet at the Robinson Nature Center, 6692 Cedar Lane in Columbia, the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt and the Howard County Conservancy at Mount Pleasant Farm in Woodstock. Field trips to significant local environmental sites are part of the program. A $50 fee is required at enrollment.

Partners are: Climate Change Initiative of Howard County, Department of Recreation and Parks Robinson Nature Center, Howard County public schools, Howard County Conservancy, University of Maryland Extension Howard County, James and Anne Robinson Foundation, and the Friends of Patapsco Valley and Heritage Greenway.

'Volunteer of the Year'

Nomination forms for Howard County's Volunteer of the Year are available at howardcountymd.gov. Program recognizes individuals (youth and adults), nonprofit groups and agencies, or businesses that have demonstrated commitment and dedication to the community. Deadline is Friday, Sept. 16.

To qualify, nominees must either live or do their volunteer work in Howard County. In addition, their efforts should have an effect on an individual or the community. For individual nominations, the nominated service must be performed outside the scope of the nominee's paid employment.

Completed forms should be mailed to: Howard County Government, Office of Public Information, 3430 Courthouse Drive, Ellicott City, 21043, or faxed to 410-313-3299.

All nominees will be recognized at a ceremony at the George Howard Building on Oct. 26. Event is free and open to the public.

Tutors needed

A-OK (Assist Our Kids) Mentoring-Tutoring Inc. seeks adult volunteers to work in Howard County public schools and in after-school programs. Volunteers may work with individual students and/or small groups during and after school. Volunteers are asked to commit for one hour a week for a minimum of one school year. Among the schools the organization is associated with are Atholton, Bryant Woods, Cradlerock, Longfellow, Phelps Luck, Running Brook and Stevens Forest elementary schools, along with several new partner schools in North Laurel. Auditions

Silhouette Stages will hold auditions for "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 15-16 at Slayton House Theater, 10400 Cross Fox Lane in Columbia. Actors/singers 18 and older of all ethnic backgrounds are needed. For auditions prepare 16-32 bars of an up-tempo vocal selection in a classic or pop musical theater style and bring sheet music in appropriate key or karaoke CD. Piano accompanist will be provided. Be prepared to read from a script.
