After undefeated season, St. Mary's Stallions fall in championship semi-final

After finishing the regular season undefeated at 10-0, and capturing the Mid-Atlantic Region 2 District 1 championship, St. Mary of the Mills CYO varsity softball team was edged, 17-16, by eventual champion St. Patrick's in the semifinal round of the Archdiocese of Washington City Championship July 30. In a game that went into extra innings and lasted close to four hours, the Stallions came from behind six times and scored three runs in the last inning before coming up short with the bases loaded.

Claire Mudd, Francesca Giuliani and Gillian Peters led the team with three hits each, as Kiley Sweeney added two and Alyssa Meyer had one. Giuliani was the leader in RBIs with five, followed by Meyer (4), Mudd (2) and Peters (1).

The Stallions stole 20 bases led by Mudd with five; Lauritsen, and Sweeney with three each; Meyers, Peters and Giuliani with two; and Ashleigh Jacobs, Sofia Carrasco and Caroline Goyne with one each.

Meyer and Lauritsen led in walks with four each, followed by Peters, Sweeney and Mudd (3 each) and Carrasco, Giuliani and Goyne (1 each).

Starting pitcher Sweeney had eight strikeouts in five innings and reliever Goyne had six strikeouts in four innings. Defensive play of the game was right-fielder Jacobs catching a towering fly ball.

The Stallion's 10-0 record earned the team a top seed and first-round bye. In the second round, the Stallions defeated St. Jane DeChantel, 20-5, with 20 hits. Leading the Stallions in hitting were Peters with four, Giuliani and Jacobs with three each and Goyne, Katie Krutz, Andee Lauritsen and Kiley Sweeney with two hits each. Triples were hit by Meyer, Mudd and Peters; and Giuliani, Goyne, Peters, Sweeney and Krutz hit doubles. Mudd led the team with four RBIs, followed by Giuliani with three; Sweeney, Jacobs and Lauritsen with two; and Meyer, Goyne, Peters and Krutz with one. Sofia Carrasco showed patience at the plate earning three walks. The Stallions also showed speed on the bases with 11 steals led by Jacobs (4) and Krutz (3), Giuliani, Lauritsen, Peters and Goyne. Starting pitcher Sweeney had six strikeouts and reliever-pitcher Goyne came in the game with the bases loaded and struck out three straight batters while totaling seven strikeouts for the game. Defensive plays of the game were catcher Mudd throwing out runners at second and third as short stop Goyne and third-baseman Giuliani made the tags, and first-baseman Peters snaring a hard line drive.
