Live at the lakefront

Live music at downtown Columbia's Lake Kittamaqundi lakefront continue with a performance by Jettstream, a classic rock cover band which plays Thu., Aug. 11, 8 p.m. The seven-piece Eastern European/Balkan Gypsy band Balti Mare can be heard Sat., Aug. 13, 8 p.m.

The Columbia Village Centers Courtyard concert series continues with the Automatic Slim playing blues rock Thu., Aug. 11, 6 p.m., at the Dorsey's Search Village Center. Local folk singer Ellis Woodward will perform a kid's-oriented show Fri., Aug. 12, 6 p.m., at the River Hill Village Center.

Strike up the orchestra

The Columbia Orchestra will hold auditions for musicians Sun., Aug. 14, 1-5 p.m., and Mon., Aug. 15, 7-10 p.m., at Christ Episcopal Church (6800 Oakland Mills Road, Columbia). The volunteer community orchestra is seeking permanent positions for contra bassoon and all string instruments, plus substitutes for its woodwind, brass and percussion players. Sing with the Pros

Columbia Pro Cantare is beginning auditions for all parts for its 35th anniversary season, which commences in October. Regular rehearsals begin Sept. 6 and are held every Tuesday at Hammond High School, 7:30-10 p.m. This season the group will perform music by Haydn, Handel and area composer Tom Benjamin. 'Spelling' for Silhouette

Columbia's Silhouette Stages theatrical company will hold auditions for its fall production of the musical "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" Mon., Aug. 15 and Tue., Aug. 16, 7 p.m., at Slayton House in the Wilde Lake Village Center. Actors should arrive prepared with 16-32 bars of an uptempo song and a ballad, and bring sheet music in an appropriate key or a karaoke CD. For information, go to or email
