Ravens camp highlights, Aug. 9: Scuffles break out as tempers flare

August 09, 2011

TEMPER TEMPER: Tuesday's practice featured the team's first scuffles of training camp. The first brouhaha occurred during a rushing drill on the far end of a practice field away from the eyes of the media. But the second flare-up involved offensive tackle Andre Ramsey and outside linebacker Albert McClelland, who actually threw punches at each other. After the dust-up was cleared, Ramsey walked back to the locker room clenching and unclenching his right hand.

NICE TRY: Rookie wide receiver Torrey Smith nearly made the play of the day when he tried an over-the-head catch of a long bomb by quarterback Joe Flacco. But the ball glanced off his hands and fell into the end zone.

LOOK, MA, ONE HAND: Ray Rice is noted for his feet, but the running back can also show off his hands. Flacco threw a pass underneath that was behind Rice, but he reached back with his right hand and pulled in the ball before turning upfield for a long gain.

CLOSE CALL: During a full-team exercise, Flacco found Smith for a significant gain along the left sideline. But cornerback Lardarius Webb argued with coach John Harbaugh that he would've sacked Flacco before he released the ball. Harbaugh was unconvinced.

OUCH: During that same drill, Flacco hit Smith on a crossing route. Smith was open because free safety Ed Reed and cornerback Chris Carr collided into each other. Both players were slow to get up, but they were not seriously injured.

CLASS IS IN SESSION: During a one-on-one exercise involving pass rushers and offensive linemen, outside linebacker Paul Kruger schooled rookie right tackle Jah Reid with an inside spin move that left Reid trying to grab the back of Kruger's jersey.

INJURIES: Players who are on the physically-unable-to-perform list include wide receiver David Reed (wrist), offensive tackle Ramon Harewood (knees) and defensive tackle Brandon McKinney (knee). Players who did not practice included wide receivers James Hardy (hamstring) and rookie Rodney Bradley (unspecified), cornerback Domonique Foxworth (right knee), center Matt Birk (left knee), tight end Ed Dickson (hamstring), linebacker Tavares Gooden (unspecified) and defensive tackle Cornell Banks (unspecified). Carr and defensive end Cory Redding returned after not participating in Monday's session.

OVERHEARD: "He got like four feet in! I saw that from back here!" — Wide receiver Anquan Boldin protesting an official's ruling that wide receiver Marcus Smith failed to catch a pass in the end zone with both feet in-bounds.

NEXT DAY'S SCHEDULE: Wednesday's session is a walk through that is closed to the media and the public. Thursday night's preseason opener at the Philadelphia Eagles begins at 7:30 p.m.
