Here's the list of physicians and other medical professionals who were sanctioned by the Maryland Board of Physicians in May. Stay tuned for those sanctioned in June in a post later today:

Phyllis K. Barson, M.D.
Area of Practice: Anesthesiology (Silver Spring, MD)Suspension for a period of 90 days, upon termination of 90 day suspension, Probation for a minimum of 2 years subject to terms and conditions. The Board found that the physician failed to meet the standard of care and failed to maintain adequate medical records. Date of Action: May 2, 2011

Jennifer R. Baxter, M.D.
Area of Practice: Unspecified (Chevy Chase, MD)Administrative Fine of $1,000. The physician practiced medicine after her medical license had lapsed in violation of Md. Code Ann. Health Occ. §14-601. Date of Action: May 9, 2011

Catherine Brophy, M.D.
Area of Practice: Family Practice (Dunkirk, MD)Termination of probationary terms and conditions imposed by the Consent Order dated February 24, 2010. The physician has complied with the terms and conditions precedent. Date of Action: May 5, 2011

Karen Carr, No License
Area of Practice: Unlicensed (Baltimore, MD)Cease and Desist from the practice of medicine. The individual practiced medicine in Maryland without a license through the practice of obstetrics, the provision of pre-partum care, the delivery of babies, the provision of post-partum care and the practice of neonatology. Date of Action: May 25, 2011

Max H. Cohen, M.D.
Area of Practice: General Surgery (Potomac, MD)
Suspension for 3 months, to begin 3 months after the effective date of the Consent Order. During the 3 month period between the effective date of the Consent Order and the suspension, the physician will wind down his practice and refer his patients to other practitioners. The physician shall not perform: FNAs, biopsies of any type debridements and excisions during the 3-month wind down period. The Board found that the physician failed to meet the standard of care and failed to maintain adequate medical records in the care and treatment of six of six patients reviewed. The Board determined that the physician grosslyoverutilized health care services by performing excessive procedures in the absence of medical necessity. Date of Action: May 2, 2011

Anand M. Dhanda, M.D.
Area of Practice: Urological Surgery (Pasadena, MD)Termination of probationary terms and conditions imposed by the Consent Order dated April 7, 2008. The physician has complied with the conditions precedent. Date of Action: May 5, 2011

Mark P. Downey, M.D.
Area of Practice: Anesthesiology
3205 Summit Square Place, Suite 100, Lexington, KY 40509
Probation until license is activated as full and unrestricted by the Kentucky Medical Board. The Board took reciprocal action based upon a disciplinary action by the Commonwealth of Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure in which the physician’s license was indefinitely restricted/limited due to the physician’s substance abuse history. Date of Action: May 12, 2011

John R. Durocher, M.D.
Area of Practice: Internal Medicine (Rock Hall, MD)
Summary Suspension, immediately stayed with the following condition: the Respondent shall not prescribe any Schedule II, III or IV CDS at any practice location except at the Hospice of Queen Anne’s County. The Board found that the physician failed to meet the standards of quality medical care and failed to keep adequate medical records in eleven pain management patients reviewed.

Patti L. Ford, RCP
Area of Practice: Respiratory Care Practice (Frederick, MD)Reprimand with terms and conditions (upon applying for reinstatement). The Board found that the practitioner took controlled dangerous substances from her workplace. Date of Action: May 26, 2011

Mark R. Geier, M.D.
Area of Practice: Genetic Counseling (Silver Spring, MD)Summary Suspension affirmed. The Board found that there exists a substantial risk of serious harm to the public health, safety or welfare in the physician’s continued practice. Date of Action: May 12, 2011

Joseph F. Gibbons, M.D.
Area of Practice: Internal Medicine (Elkridge, MD)Termination of probationary terms and conditions imposed by the Consent Order dated October 27, 2010. The physician has complied with the terms and conditions precedent. Date of Action: May 5, 2011

Carol M. Gillies, P.A.
Area of Practice: Physician Assistant (Ruxton, MD)Reprimand; Probation for a minimum of 1 year subject to terms and conditions. The Board found that the Physician Assistant was guilty of unprofessional conduct in the practice of medicine and patient abandonment as a result of her abrupt resignation while patients were waiting to be seen. Date of Action: May 2, 2011
