Field hockey

The Howard/Carroll Officials Association is looking for individuals interested in officiating high school field hockey. Training will be provided during the week of Aug. 15. Email or call 410-804-8053.

The Spitfire Field Hockey Club holds tryouts for its U-19 U.S. Field Hockey National Festival team Aug. 7 from 9 a.m.- noon at Western Regional Park. The club will take a team to the premier hockey event over the Thanksgiving weekend. Go to or call 410-707-6711.

Cross country

The Howard County Junior Striders cross country program registration is available at or Practices will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays for eight weeks at Centennial High School beginning Aug. 30. Beginners and experienced runners from first through eighth grade are welcome.


Baltimore Bays (U-13 girls) is looking for additional players and a goalie for the upcoming season. The team is based in Columbia and plays in WAGS league. Interested players should email or call 301-442-3620.

The SAC Extreme (U-18 girls) is looking for additional players for 2011-12. The team will participate in college showcase tournaments and WAGS spring play. Interested players should email or call 301-957-8809.

Table tennis and chess

The Howard County/Carroll County Table Tennis Club will host a table tennis and chess day camp in the Carrolltown Center, in Eldersburg, Aug. 22-26. All ages and levels of play welcome. The full-day camp runs from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a 30-minute lunch break. Email or call 301-580-9842.


Cheerleading tryouts for the Maryland Marlins All-Stars will be held Aug. 11 from 6-7 p.m. Eleven teams are available of different ages and skill levels. Go to or call 410-796-2244.


The Western Howard County Fever girls fastpitch travel program will hold tryouts for all age levels in August at Western Regional Park, field 3. The Fever will field eight teams. All teams will play fall ball, practice indoors during the winter and run strength and conditioning sessions, as well as pitching and catching clinics. The tryout dates are:

10-U: 3-5:30 p.m., Aug. 7, 13 and 28.

12-U: 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Aug. 6; 3-5:30 p.m., Aug. 14; 12:30 p.m.-3, Aug. 28.

14-U: 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Aug. 7 and 14; 12:30-3 p.m., Aug. 21.

16-U: 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Aug. 21 and 21.

18-U: 12:30-3 p.m., Aug. 13, 14, 20 and 21.

Registration is open for ages 5-17 for the HCYP girls fastpitch fall season. This is an instructional program for 8-U, 10-U and 12-U players and includes a competitive older league primarily for high school players not playing year-round but looking toward spring tryouts. 12-U: Aug. 7, 2-4 p.m., field 7; Aug. 9, 6-7:30 p.m., field 12.

14-U: Aug. 7, 4-6 p.m., field 7; Aug. 10, 6-7:30 p.m., field 7.

16-U: Aug. 7, 6-8 p.m., field 7; Aug. 11, 6-7:30 p.m., field 7.

The Lakeshore Lightning 18-U travel showcase team will hold tryouts at Old Mill High School Aug. 13 and 20 from 10 a.m-noon and Aug. 14 from 1-3 p.m. E-mail or call 410-360-9530.

The Maryland Cyclones U-12 fastpitch team is holding tryouts from 6-8 p.m., Aug. 10 and 12 at Good Counsel High School in Olney.


Quick Stix registration is underway for girls seven-a-side fall lacrosse league. Three divisions of competition will include high school, middle school and elementary (grades 4-5).

Sign up as an individual or with a team (maximum of 15 players).

League play, by division, will follow a set schedule. Each team will play one game every Sunday afternoon from Sept. 18 to Oct. 23 between 1 and 4 p.m. at Bates Heritage Park in Annapolis. Register online at Call 410-573-1414, Ext. 111.
