Code Orange air quality alert in effect

The National Weather Service was calling for Friday to be mostly sunny and hot in the Baltimore area, with a high near 102 degrees. Heat index values will be as high as 109. Breezes will be 4 to 7 miles per hour.

Friday night is expected to be partly cloudy, with a low around 84 and west winds around 8 miles per hour. There is a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 2 a.m.

A heat advisory has been issued for the Baltimore area from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity can cause heat illnesses.

The Maryland Department of the Environment has issued a Code Orange air quality alert Friday for the Baltimore area. A Code Orange air quality alert means that air pollution concentrations within the region may become unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children, people with lung diseases and the elderly.

Saturday is expected to be mostly sunny, with a high near 94 and northwest winds between 5 and 9 miles per hour. Saturday night will be mostly clear, with a low around 79 and light west winds.
