Havre de Grace Junior Softball wins

Little League All-Stars beat Delmar in 13-14 division

July 29, 2011

The Havre de Grace Little League Junior Softball All-Stars stayed alive in Maryland State Tournament play Sunday with a 9-6 win over District 6 champion Delmar.

Havre de Grace will face St. Mary's American Little League Monday at 5:30 p.m. in Hurlock in a elimination game. St Mary's put Havre de Grace in the loser's bracket Saturday with a 12-5 win.

In Sunday's win, the game was a tight, back and forth battle into the top of the fifth inning with Havre de Grace holding a 5-4 lead when lightning forced a delay of 45 minutes.

Out of the delay, Havre de Grace got out of the inning with no damage, and did some damage of its own in the bottom of the inning.

Lindsey Fenner started a four-run rally with a one-out single. A second out later, Annelise Beer drew a walk. Rebecca Ashman followed with another walk that loaded the bases for Samara White. Samara cleared them with a three-run double down the left field line. She scored when Riley Arnold was safe on a error, making it, 9-4.

Delmar used two Havre de Grace errors to push across two more runs, but that's all it scored. Delmar was its own worst enemy, having three base runners thrown out at home.

White and Fenner each had two hits to lead Havre de Grace.

Ashley Algard pitched a complete game for the win, striking out four and walking three. Algard allowed five hits and hit a batter.

Havre de Grace also committed five errors. Delmar made three.
