Luring home buyers into the city will take more than a $40 property tax cut

I have some comments about a central issue of Baltimore's mayoral campaign:

I am a young doctor in the city. My spouse and I have been looking to buy a home in the city for a year, and we have held off because of the egregious property taxes. We realize we could get much more for our money in the county, but we are dedicated to the pulse of the city and the diversity here. Property taxes are the single issue that, if they are not reduced, will drive us to the county.

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake has basically said no to real reduction in the property tax — 9 percent over nine years? Seriously? That is a coupon, not tax relief.

A reduction in the property tax rate is the only way to keep young people in the city — they will start families and businesses in the city if the city cultivates an environment that rewards them for investing in Baltimore rather than punishes them for becoming homeowners. Buying a home in the city right now is basically irrational.

This is the reason I plan to vote for Otis Rolley this year — property tax relief now, not $40 per year under the current mayor's plan.
