Cross country

The Howard County Junior Striders cross country program registration is available at http://www.striders.net or http://www.bullseyerunning.com. Practices will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays for eight weeks at Centennial High School beginning Aug. 30. Beginners and experienced runners from first through eighth grade are welcome.

The Striders' cross county race scheduled for July 22 at Reservoir High was postponed due to the weather conditions. It has been rescheduled for Thursday, Aug. 4. The other two races in the series are July 29 at Hammond High and Aug. 12 at Oakland Mills. The races begin at 6:30 p.m. Adults and kids are welcome. Go to http://www.striders.net.

Soccer

The Oakland Mills Boosters is hosting a summer soocer camp at Oakland Mills High School Aug. 1-5. Call 443-801-9881.

Baltimore Bays (U-13 girls) is looking for additional players and goalie for the upcoming season. The team is based in Columbia and plays in WAGS league. Interested players should email kgriffin@naimichael.com or call 301-442-3620.

The SAC Extreme (U-18 girls) is looking for additional players for 2011-12. The team will participate in college showcase tournaments and WAGS spring play. Interested players should email mraffael731@yahoo.com or call 301-957-8809.

Field hockey

The Spitfire Field Hockey Club holds tryouts for its U-19 U.S. Field Hockey National Festival team Aug. 7 from 9 a.m.- noon at Western Regional Park. Cheerleading

Cheerleading tryouts for the Maryland Marlins All-Stars will be held Aug. 11 from 6-7 p.m. Eleven teams are available of different ages and skill levels. Go to marylandmarlinscom or call 410-796-2244.

Softball

Registration is open for ages 5-17 for the HCYP girls fastpitch fall season. This is an instructional program for 8-U, 10-U and 12-U players and includes a competitive older league primarily for high school playres not playing year-round but looking towards spring tryouts. Register at http://www.hcyp.org or print out a registration form to main in with a check.

10-U: noon-2 p.m., field 7, Aug. 7; 6-7:30 p.m., field 9, Aug. 8.

12-U: 2-4 p.m., field 7, Aug. 7; 6-7:30 p.m., field 12, Aug. 9.

14-U: 4-6 p.m., field 7, Aug. 7; 6-7:30 p.m., field 7, Aug. 10.

16-U: 6-8 p.m., field 7, Aug. 7; 6-7:30 p.m., field 7, Aug. 11

18-U: 6-8 p.m., field 7, Aug. 9.

The Maryland Cyclones U-12 fastpitch team is holding tryouts from 6-8 p.m., Aug. 10 and 12 at Good Counsel High School in Olney.

Football

Registration for Columbia Ravens Football is open for ages 5-14. Go to http://www.columbiaravens.com. In addition, the organization seeks qualified, committed individuals to coach, especially at the Pit Bull (ages 5-6) and 14-U levels. The Maryland Middle School Combine will be held July 30-31 at Mount St. Joseph High School. This middle school exposure camp will be coached by football coaches from the MIAA, WCAC and public high schools. Cost: $30. Go to http://www.middleschoolcombine.com or call 202-270-6712. 

High school football officials and timers are needed in the Washington Metropolitan Area. Anyone who is 18 prior to Sept. 1, 2011 is eligible. No officiating experience is required. Baseball

The Savage 9-U travel team will hold tryouts for the fall/spring team Aug. 6, 7 and 14. All tryouts will start at 4 p.m. at Savage Park, field 3. Email carriedawes@comcast.net for more information.
