The residents of a Columbia townhouse that was shot at multiple times early Saturday morning appear to have been targeted, Howard County police said Monday.

Police went to the townhouse in the 5700 block of Cedar Lane at 2 a.m. after neighbors called 911. According to police, a 39-year-old woman and her 8-year old daughter secured themselves in a bedroom and neither was injured by the shots fired at the rear of the residence.

An 18-year male also lives at the townhouse but was not home at the time.

Police spokeswoman Elizabeth Schroen said Monday that this is the first report of a shooting at that residence.

Police do not know of a motive for the shooting, and have increased patrols in the vicinity. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 410-313-STOP. Callers will remain anonymous.
