A 24-year-old Middle River man was killed Saturday morning, when his car veered across an oncoming traffic lane and crashed into a tree just before 1 a.m., Baltimore County police said.

Daniel Burkindine was driving a 1995 Saab eastbound on Gunpowder Road, just east of Gassinger Road, when he crossed the yellow lines into the westbound travel lanes, eventually leaving the roadway and striking a tree, said Cpl. John Wachter, describing the crash as "single vehicle, single occupant."

Paramedics pronounced Burkindine dead at the scene, Wachter said. Police do not yet know what caused the crash or whether alcohol was a factor.

His wife, Lisa Burkindine, said in an e-mail message to The Sun that she believes her husband fell asleep at the wheel. The couple has a 3-year-old daughter, named Carley.

"He was a great father [and] a wonderful father," she wrote. "He was a wonderful person, a much loved husband [and] father."
