Free workshop

"Caregiver 101" will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 30, at the Arnold Senior Activity Center, 44 Church Road. The workshop will provide information needed to prepare for discharge from a hospital or rehabilitation facility, and on choosing a rehabilitation facility. It will also teach caregivers how to manage medication and incontinence, and to support good nutrition and hydration at home. Organizing your life

"Declutter and Downsizing: A Guide for Seniors" will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 27, at the Pasadena Senior Activity Center, 4103 Mountain Road. Participants can learn practical tips and information from professional organizer, Trish Walsh, on how to clear out the clutter and bring a new level of organization to your life. Painting workshop

A decorative painting workshop will be held Wednesday, July 27, at the Pascal Senior Activity Center, 125 Dorsey Road in Glen Burnie. The Chesapeake Bay Decorative Painters will provide the free "make it take it" workshop, with the project taking about a half-hour to complete in the 12:30 p.m. or 1 p.m. program. Prevent heatstroke

Participants can learn the signs, symptoms and the way to prevent heatstroke from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday at the Brooklyn Park Senior Activity Center, 202 Hammonds Lane. Information: 410-222-6847.

Computer classes

"Basic Windows Computer Skill and Knowledge" workshops will be held on Wednesdays at the O'Malley Senior Activity Center, 1275 Odenton Road in Odenton. Classes will be held through mid-September. Workshops include lectures, practice and review. Classes are for beginners only. Information: 410-222-6227.

Weight loss

An eight-week weight-loss program will be held Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. on Wednesdays at the O'Malley Senior Activity Center, 1275 Odenton Road, Odenton. The program is sponsored by the county Department of Aging and Disabilities' Nutrition Program. Sessions will cover goals, nutrition facts on fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. Shopping, storing, and serving healthy food on a budget and eating out, as well as revamping your recipes, will be discussed. Sessions are free, but registration is required. Picnic

Tickets are on sale for the Pasadena Senior Activity Center's summer picnic being held Aug. 17 at Kurtz's Beach, 2070 Kurtz Ave. in Pasadena. Doors open at 11 a.m. with lunch from noon to 2 p.m. Johnny Walker will provide the music. Space is limited. Tickets $15. Information: 410-222-0030.

The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities has published its 2011-2012 edition of "Services for Seniors, Adults with Disabilities and Caregivers." The directory includes information on rental and housing assistance, legal help, county Social Services benefits and caregiver information. Free copies are available at the department's headquarters, 2666 Riva Road, Fourth Floor, Annapolis; the seven senior activity centers; county libraries; at CVS, Food Lion and WaWa stores; and online at http://www.aacounty.org/aging. Scrabble Challenge your brain by playing Scrabble, 12:45 p.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays. New participants are welcome. Information: 410-222-1922.

'Memoir writing,' a course on autobiographical writing, meets from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays. There will be an opportunity to learn listening and interviewing skills, writing tips and proofreading. Registration required. Information: 410-222-1922.

O'Malley Senior Activity Center The following activities will be offered at the center, 1270 Odenton Road, Odenton:

Quilt Club Every Friday at 1 p.m. at the O'Malley Annex. Participants can help one another with projects and learn new ideas and techniques. Machines are available. New members welcome.

Single seniors group The Single Seniors Group at Pascal Senior Activity Center, 125 Dorsey Road in Glen Burnie, encourages companionship, support and group participation in activities such as movies, dances, picnics and tours. Health insurance A representative from the Senior Health Insurance Program is available by appointment to discuss health insurance concerns at the Arnold Senior Activity Center. Appointments and information: 410-222-1922.

Volunteer grandparents The Foster Grandparents Program of the county Department of Aging and Disabilities seeks volunteer grandparents to mentor children with special needs. Volunteers serve 15 to 40 hours a week, providing mentoring, tutoring, advice and attention. Volunteers also teach life skills to children in special education classes and provide staffing for a homeless shelter, family support center and other agencies. Activities may include reading stories, listening, helping children feed themselves, setting the table, working with puzzles, and helping children learn colors, numbers and the alphabet. Volunteers must be income-eligible and at least 60 years old. Benefits include a tax-free stipend, paid training, vacation, sick leave, free transportation, lunch and a physical exam.
