The driver of a van struck by a stolen car Saturday in Northwest Baltimore has died of his injuries, according to police. The unidentified man's name will be released after his next of kin is notified.

The car was stolen from the victim of a shooting at about 3 a.m. Saturday in the 2200 block of Liberty Heights Ave., near the Mondawmin shopping center, according to Detective Jeremy Silbert, a city police spokesman.

An officer spotted a car fitting the description of the victim's stolen vehicle about 3:30 p.m. in the 4100 block of W. Belvedere Ave., Silbert said.

The officer made a U-turn, but the vehicle sped away, he said. A few minutes later, police received a report of a crash near the intersection of Belle and Ferndale avenues involving the same car.

The car had hit a van and a parked vehicle, the detective said. The driver of the van was thrown from the vehicle and taken to a local hospital in serious condition, where he later died.

Police have taken a man into custody and he is considered a person of interest, Silbert said, but no formal charges have been filed.
