Meggett, O'Brien named to award lists

Running back Davin Meggett has been named to the Doak Walker Award watch list, given to the top running back in college football, and quarterback Danny O'Brien is on the watch list for the Davey O'Brien Award, which honors the nation's top quarterback. Meggett, a senior, rushed for a career-best 720 yards in 2010. The Surrattsville native ranks 20th in Maryland history for career rushing yards (1,515) and is tied for 17th in career rushing touchdowns (14). O'Brien, the 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year, passed for 2,438 yards in 13 games last season. The sophomore from Kernersville, N.C., went 7-3 as a starter, posting a 134.5 passer rating. O'Brien is also on the watch list for the Maxwell Award, given to college football's top overall player. He is one of three ACC quarterbacks on the 38-man Davey O'Brien watch list. Meggett is one of five ACC running backs on the 51-man Doak Walker list.

Caps sign Alzner, Bouchard and Micflikier to deals

The Capitals re-signed defenseman Karl Alzner to a two-year deal and winger Francois Bouchard to a one-year deal Friday, and added forward Jacob Micflikier on a one-year pact Thursday. Alzner, 22, appeared in all 82 regular-season games for the Capitals in 2010-11, posting 12 points. Bouchard, 23, spent last season with the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League, recording 12 goals and 12 assists. Micflikier, 27, played in 78 games for the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL last season, notching 29 goals and 32 assists.

UMES' Frahm named MEAC Woman of the Year

UMES bowler Kristina Frahm was selected as the 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Woman of the Year. Frahm led UMES to national bowling titles in 2011, the NCAA title and United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Team Championship. The award celebrates the achievements of female senior student-athletes who have excelled in academics, athletics, service and leadership. Frahm will represent the MEAC as its nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year, which will be announced during an awards dinner Oct. 16 in Indianapolis.

Professional tennis: Nadia Petrova has been added as a wild-card selection to the field for the inaugural Citi Open to be held at the Tennis Center at College Park from Friday to July 31. The former world No. 3, Petrova has won 28 Women's Tennis Association titles, nine in singles and 19 in doubles. She is ranked No. 32 in singles and No. 9 in doubles.

College volleyball: Baltimore City Community College will host the 2011 Charm City Volleyball Tournament on Sept. 10. Matches start at noon at the BCCC P.E. Center at the Liberty Campus. Tournament participants include Anne Arundel Community College, CCBC-Essex, Chesapeake College and host BCCC. Eight matches will be played on two courts, and the proceeds from the tournament will be donated to the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer-Baltimore Foundation.
