County Executive Ken Ulman holds his annual public forum at 7 p.m. Monday, July 25, at the North Laurel Community Center, 9411 Whiskey Bottom Road. Residents will have an opportunity to ask him questions, make comments or offer suggestions on any topic they choose. He will be joined county department heads. Slayton House Gallery has been renamed the Bernice Kish Gallery at Slayton House in honor of the recently retired gallery director. Carole Black will take over the position of director. Howard County Housing is accepting applications for the July open enrollment period for the county's Moderate Income Housing Unit program. Enrollment period ends Friday, July 29.
The program is an inclusionary zoning program that requires developers of new housing in certain zoning districts to sell or rent some of the new dwelling units to households of moderate income. The program offers quality new homes at reduced prices and rents to income-eligible families.
The department will also hold a free "MIHU Buyers and Renters Workshop" from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Gateway Building, 6751 Columbia Gateway Drive in Columbia. The workshop, free and open to the public, will explain the program's eligibility requirements and application process for prospective homebuyers and renters. To purchase an MIHU home, individuals must apply during an open enrollment period to be placed on a waiting list.
Applicant's household income may not exceed 80 percent of Howard County's median income, which as of Jan. 1 is $101,940 for a family of four.
Teen advisory committees
The Columbia Association is recruiting youth, ages 11-19, to become members of its Middle School and Teen Advisory Committees. The association is looking for teens who want to make a difference, get involved in their community and be a part of the solution. As members of the committee, teens can create and implement events and programs for their peers. Past activities have included the Teen Idol Competition, Teen Role Model Competition, Battle of the Dance, charity fundraisers, Teen Tuesdays concerts at the lakefront, a free college fair, Save the Planet Day and more.
The Columbia Art Center offers a camp for grades 1-8, through Aug. 19 at 6100 Foreland Garth. Children will experience printmaking, painting, sculpture, collage, drawing, working with clay and more. Artists will teach campers how to experiment with colors, textures and media in a variety of theme-based projects as they go from studio to studio. Camp also includes Zumba dancing and swimming. Camp is offered in one and two week sessions: Cost for the one-week sessions are $235 for residents and $275 for non-residents. Two-week sessions are $405 and $475.
