Bay alliance

Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay needs volunteers to staff the reception desk, answer phones, and provide clerical support and program and project support for the staff. Hours are flexible. Email office@allianceforthebay.org.

Correctional Center

Volunteers age 21 and older who pass a background check are needed at the county correctional center to serve as adult literacy tutors, to assist in the library and the sewing program, as a newsletter editor and as a photographer for special programs and events. The center also needs people to assist with recreational and sports activities, to teach CPR and to lead substance-abuse meetings. Information: 410-222-6350, ext. 3159.

Department of Juvenile Services

Volunteers 21 and older are needed to hear charges of first-time offenders, determine consequences and provide mentoring. Background checks are required and training will be provided. There are also opportunities for volunteers to serve as foster grandparents, interns and advisory board members. Information: 410-230-3132.

Habitat for Humanity

Volunteers are needed at the Arundel and Baltimore ReStores for sales, stocking and receiving merchandise, picking up donations, answering phones and other duties. Individuals are needed who can help weekly, biweekly or monthly. Information: chesapeakerestore.org.

Help for troubled youths

Hearts & Homes for Youth needs volunteers age 18 and older for tutoring, mentoring, internships, recreation sponsors, renovation projects, office assistance and beautification projects. The organization helps troubled children and youths who are abused, neglected or runaways to become independent and productive. Information: 301-589-8444, ext. 212.

Light House Shelter

Volunteers age 18 and older are needed for a variety of duties associated with the food program, children's program, cleaning and maintenance, office and administration, adult education programs and the overnight homeless program. Pro bono professionals are also needed to serve the shelter and its clients with skills such as accounting, medicine, law and carpentry. Hours are flexible and training is provided. Maritime Museum

The Annapolis Maritime Museum needs volunteers to expand its environmental education program, conduct tours of the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse, restore wooden boats and help with the winter and summer concert series. Information: 410-295-0104 or amaritime.org.

Rob's Barber Shop Community Foundation

Nonprofit organization features projects that provide no-charge grooming services for those who cannot afford to go to the barber or beauty salon. Volunteers, 16 and older, are needed for administrative tasks. Barbers and hairstylists are also needed to serve homeless and other needy people in the area. Information: 410-519-2622 or rbcf.com.

South River Federation

Volunteers are needed for special event planning, administrative assistance, seasonal work projects such as oyster garden planting, data collection, water sampling and more. Quarterly meetings are open to the public. Information: 410-224-3802 or southriverfederation.net.
