Merritt Athletic Club, in Eldersburg, recently launched a series of program "Rock the Pool" summer events for preteens and teens.

Over the course of the summer, the Eldersburg location will host four events at the outdoor pool area and multi-purpose gym on Progress Way. Two events are geared for children ages 7 to 12 and two events will be for teens ages 13 to17.

The first of the events was a Preteen Night, for ages 7 to 12. Future dates are: July 30 and Aug. 13 for Teen Nights, geared toward ages 13 to 17; and Aug. 6 for the Preteen Night.

The events run 7 to 10 p.m. each night, and are open to members and non-members — though there is a cost for both.

Rachael Gracia, aquatics director at the Eldersburg Merritt Athletic Club, said she has three children herself, and designed the events with the idea that some local children need a summer outlet for activities.

"This program is designed to serve the entire Eldersburg community," said Garcia. "If we attract the turnout we expect, we plan to make this a weekly summertime event."

During the events, the wave pool and water slide will be open for all age groups, and the preteen parties include sack races, face painting, water-balloon fights and a moon bounce.

The teen parties kick-off with a Battle of the Bands that will feature local high school bands. Both the preteen and teen parties feature a DJ, prizes and food available for purchase.

Officials said at least four lifeguards will be on duty, as well as chaperones and security. If inclement weather should occur, the events will be relocated to the club's multi-purpose gym.

The cost to attend is $9.99 for members and $19.99 for non-members. For details, or to register, call 410-549-8855.
