3 high O's draft picks assigned to Aberdeen

The Orioles announced Monday that 2011 third-round selection Mike Wright, fifth-round choice Matt Taylor and ninth-round pick Devin Jones have been assigned to the Aberdeen IronBirds of the short-season Single-A New York-Penn League. Wright, a right-hander, made 16 starts this past spring for East Carolina, going 6-4 with a 2.79ERA. Taylor, a left-hander, was 7-5 with a 3.31ERA in 15 starts for Middle Georgia. Jones,a right-hander, made 19 appearances and eight starts for Mississippi State, going 2-5 with a 4.37ERA. To make room on the roster, pitchers Samuel Taveras, James Brandhorst and Brandon Holloway and outfielder Cody Young were released. Left-handed pitcher Chris George was transferred from the Triple-A Norfolk Tides, but isn't expected to report to Aberdeen.

NHL: The Washington Capitals have signed veteran American Hockey League defenseman Danny Richmond to a one-year, two-way contract worth $525,000 in the NHL and $125,000 at the AHL level. Richmond, 26, posted 23 points and 121 penalty minutes in 68 games with the Toronto Marlies in 2010-11. He hasn't played in the NHL since 2007-08.
