Coppin's Victorian takes 14th in 400 hurdles at U.S. meet
Coppin State sophomore Jibri Victorian (Laurel) placed 14th overall in the 400-meter hurdles Saturday in the United States outdoor track and field championships at Eugene, Ore. Victorian finished eighth in the second of the two heats by crossing the line in 51.75 seconds, his fourth-best time this season. "Jibri competed very well against some of the top hurdlers in the world," coach Carl Hicks said. "I think he understands what that level of competition is all about. He knows the things he has to improve upon in order to compete at that level." On Friday, Victorian finished fourth in the second heat in a time of 51.33 but advanced to the semifinals by virtue of having one of the four fastest times of the non-automatic qualifiers. The top three runners from each heat earned an automatic berth in the next round. Victorian's performance capped a season in which he earned a berth in the NCAA outdoor championships, received honorable mention All-America honors and became the first Coppin State athlete to compete in the U.S. championships.
More results: Coppin State freshman Brandon Baskerville finished fourth in the high jump Friday at the U.S. outdoor track and field championships, clearing 6 feet, 93/4 inches. Edward Dudley of Lake Erie College won the event with a jump of 7-2.50, while Maalik Reynolds finished second by clearing 7-1.50. "He jumped well," Hicks said. "He cleared the bar, but didn't finish his jumps." Baskerville narrowly missed earning an automatic spot on the United States Junior Pan American team as the top two finishers claimed those berths. Baskerville cleared 6-8.75 on his first jump of the competition. He then cleared 6-9.75 on his second attempt, but failed to clear 6-11 on any of his three attempts.

Norwegian goalie Soberg selected at No. 117 in draft
With pick No. 117 in the NHL draft Saturday, the Washington Capitals added Steffen Soberg (5feet11, 176 pounds) of Norway to their group of young goaltenders. It's the third time in the past four drafts that the Caps have selected a goaltender in the fourth round (Philipp Grubauer in 2010 and Braden Holtby in 2008). No Norwegian goaltender has ever played a game in the NHL. The Capitals took defenseman Patrick Koudys from Hamilton, Ontario, in the fifth round at No. 147. At No. 177 the team chose center Travis Boyd from the U.S. under-18 squad. He's bound for the University of Minnesota this fall. With their final pick, the Capitals selected defenseman Garrett Haar, who is bound for Northeastern, at No. 207.
