Farmers' Market checks for seniors
Distribution of the Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program checks will begin in July at Anne Arundel County Senior Activity Centers. Checks are good for the purchase of fresh produce at the county's farmers' markets. Senior citizens must be at least 60 years old and meet income guidelines. Seniors will verify their eligibility at the distribution points. Checks will be available on the following sites and dates:

Skin cancer program
Learn the signs and symptoms of skin cancer and how to protect yourself from the sun's harmful rays from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday, June 27, at the Brooklyn Park Senior Activity Center, 202 Hammonds Lane. Information: 410-222-6847.

Buying a car?
"How to Effectively Negotiate a New Car Purchase" will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Pasadena Senior Activity Center, 4103 Mountain Road. Mike Rabkin, president of "From Car to Finish," will present information on how to navigate the purchase process. Program includes how to choose, test drive and negotiate for the vehicle. The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities has published its 2011-2012 edition of "Services for Seniors, Adults with Disabilities and Caregivers." The directory includes information on rental and housing assistance, legal help, county Social Services benefits and caregiver information. Arnold Senior Activity Center The following activities will be offered at the center, 44 Church Road, Arnold:

Quilt Club Every Friday at 1 p.m. at the O'Malley Annex. Participants can help one another with projects and learn new ideas and techniques. Machines are available. New members welcome.
Single seniors group The Single Seniors Group at Pascal Senior Activity Center, 125 Dorsey Road in Glen Burnie, encourages companionship, support and group participation in activities such as movies, dances, picnics and tours. Volunteer grandparents The Foster Grandparents Program of the county Department of Aging and Disabilities seeks volunteer grandparents to mentor children with special needs. Volunteers serve 15 to 40 hours a week, providing mentoring, tutoring, advice and attention. Volunteers also teach life skills to children in special education classes and provide staffing for a homeless shelter, family support center and other agencies. Activities may include reading stories, listening, helping children feed themselves, setting the table, working with puzzles, and helping children learn colors, numbers and the alphabet. Volunteers must be income-eligible and at least 60 years old. Benefits include a tax-free stipend, paid training, vacation, sick leave, free transportation, lunch and a physical exam.
