Bayhawks can't hold lead, lose on road to Lizards, 14-11

Third-year midfielder Ben Hunt scored four goals, but it wasn't enough as the Chesapeake Bayhawks lost to the Long Island Lizards, 14-11, on Thursday night in Hempstead, N.Y. Attackman Danny Glading totaled two goals and an assist for Chesapeake (3-2), which fell out of a tie for first place in Major League Lacrosse. Attackman Ben Rubeor and midfielder Kyle Dixon had two assists apiece for the Bayhawks, who led 5-4 after the first period. Attackman Matt Danowski totaled four points on three goals, one of which was a 2-pointer, to lead Long Island (2-3), which outscored Chesapeake 8-3 in the second half. Midfielders Stephen Peyser (Johns Hopkins) and Stephen Berger (Washington College) both totaled two goals and an assist for the Lizards, who trailed at halftime, 8-6. Chesapeake returns home June25 to play the Boston Cannons at 7p.m.

NHL: Former Capitals great Olie Kolzig has been hired as Washington's new associate goaltender coach. He'll work mostly with the organization's prospects in Hershey, Pa., and South Carolina. Dave Prior, who spent 12 years coaching the team's netminders, has returned to his role as director of goaltending and as the principal NHL goaltending coach. Prior and Kolzig will jointly replace Arturs Irbe, who chose not to return to the Capitals after serving as goaltending coach for the past two years.

Minor league basketball: The Anne Arundel County-based Bay Area Shuckers named Alison Pate (UMES) to their basketball operations staff.

Minor league Baseball: The Atlanta Braves promoted pitcher Greg Ross (Loch Raven), an 18th-round draft pick this month out of Frostburg State, from their Rookie-level Gulf Coast League team to Danville of the advanced Rookie-level Appalachian League.

More men's college basketball: Navy hired Kurt Kanaskie and Dan Earl as associate head coaches and D.J. Black as an assistant coach. Associate head coach Jason Crafton and assistant coach Aaron Goodman will remain as part of the coaching staff. Kanaskie spent the past eight years at Penn State, all under new Midshipmen head coach Ed DeChellis and the past two as an associate head coach. Earl spent the past six years at Penn State as an assistant coach. Black was video coordinator at Penn State the past four seasons.

College baseball: CCBC-Dundalk's Kylin Sims (Dundalk) earned the Rawlings Gold Glove for being the best defensive first baseman in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II. He was also Region XX Defensive Player of the Year.

Women's college soccer: Emily Janss (Maryland), who played for the New York Power of the Women's United Soccer Association and the W-League's Washington Freedom, has been named an assistant coach at Loyola.

Women's college lacrosse: The American Lacrosse Conference, which includes Johns Hopkins, has accepted Michigan as a member, effective immediately. … Syracuse freshman defender Natalie Glanell (South River) was named to the Inside Lacrosse All-Rookie team.

College administration: George Mason athletic director Tom O'Connor, a former Loyola College AD, received a contract extension through 2014. He has been at the school for 17years.
