A Harford County deputy was injured early Wednesday when his patrol vehicle was struck by a suspected drunken driver in Edgewood, according to the sheriff's office.

The driver, 21-year-old Kevin G. Johnstone of Edgewood, faces charges including driving under the influence, failure to control speed and reckless and negligent driving, the sheriff's office said.

According to a spokeswoman for the agency, Johnstone was traveling west in a 2006 Nissan 350Z on Pulaski Highway and lost control of the vehicle about 2:30 a.m. when he tried to make a right turn onto Mountain Road. The car hit a median, went airborne and struck Deputy Brad Sives' vehicle, which was in the southbound turn lane on Mountain Road, said the spokeswoman, Monica Worrell.

It took volunteer firefighters about 45 minutes to free Sives, 26, from his vehicle. The four-year veteran of the force was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, treated and released.

Neither Johnstone nor a male passenger in the Nissan was injured.
