Wasting watermelons when others are hungry brings us shame

June 15, 2011

Recently, while walking at Western Regional Park, I watched as several kids lined up for the Reebok Watermelon challenge. When I realized that the game involved smashing and wasting watermelons, I was embarrassed by our affluence.

I Googled this activity and found several You Tube demonstrations from all around the country showing watermelons being smashed with well-aimed lacrosse balls.

Surely, we recognize how fortunate we are in Howard County, but many others, not so far from us, are without adequate food, to say nothing of fresh, unprocessed food like watermelons.

Couldn't this Reebok traveling challenge for lacrosse players substitute the watermelons with something less wasteful? Water-filled balloons come to mind.
