UMBC campus sees another power outage, closes early

Main utility substation switch tripped after outages most of weekend over transformer fires

Power was out for the entire University of Maryland, Baltimore County campus again on Tuesday afternoon, after a switch at UMBC's main utility substation was tripped.

The campus was closed at 3 p.m., according to an e-mail sent to the university community. "We are assessing the system prior to restoring power," said the e-mail from Lynne Schaefer, vice president for administration and finance.

Two transformer fires last Thursday triggered a campus-wide power outage that lasted most of the weekend.

UMBC officials said power was restored to most buildings by Sunday night and said Monday that they expected to have all power restored by Tuesday evening. But that was before the setback Tuesday, which knocked out power around 2:30 p.m. according to Schaefer's e-mail.

During the outage, the university is housing students in residence halls powered by generators.
