Steve Johnson (St. Paul's) threw eight one-hit innings as the Bowie Baysox, the Orioles' Double-A Eastern League affiliate, ended their five-game losing streak with a 4-2 win over the visiting Richmond Flying Squirrels. Johnson's eight innings were a season high, and he tied his season-high with seven strikeouts. "I was able to throw all my pitches for strikes; I was consistent with my fastball and I was able to put it where I wanted it," he said. "They were really aggressive and I was able to get a lot of quick outs."

Attendance for title games Sunday and Monday lags

Despite the presence of two teams from Maryland and an NCAA Division I tournament final between two teams straddling the Potomac River, attendance for the final two days of championship weekend at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore was low by previous standards. The announced crowd of 35,661 for Monday's final between unseeded Maryland and seventh-seeded Virginia was the smallest at a Division I title game since those matches were moved to professional stadiums in 2003. The 18,086 figure cited each for the Division III final between Salisbury and Tufts and the Division II final between Mercyhurst and Adelphi on Sunday was the lowest since 2003. The attendance of 45,039 for the Division I semifinals between Maryland and No.5 seed Duke and Virginia and No. 6 seed Denver was the sixth-largest in NCAA history. Increased heat and humidity Sunday and Monday likely affected the attendance.

Assault charge against Haynesworth dismissed

Redskins: An assault charge against defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth was dismissed under a Virginia law that allows for a defendant to make "accord and satisfaction" with the victim. Under Virginia law, misdemeanor cases may be dismissed if the complaining witness has reached an agreement with the defendant not to press charges. Neither Haynesworth nor the motorist who made the report after a road rage incident, Arthur Velasquez, would comment afterward. The terms of the accord were not public, and the lawyers for both sides declined to say whether any money changed hands.
