Handicapped parking: Time for a crackdown on abuses

June 01, 2011

Way to go Anne Arundel County ("Arundel cops target handicap parking violators," May 28). It's about time someone started cracking down on those inconsiderate people who continue to park in a handicapped spot because they are too lazy to walk a few feet.

I have had a handicapped parking permit for almost five years. But every time I go shopping, I find myself searching for a parking space close to the store because all of the handicapped spots are taken. Once, I decided to take down tag numbers of some of those who were either too lazy to walk, were taking advantage of a relative's permit, or thought they would play Russian Roulette with the police. I then sent them into the Baltimore County Police Department but I never saw anything done about the situation.

I did, however, receive a letter thanking me for my concern. I also wrote a letter to the governor. But it appears no one cares. And it isn't just at stores like the Cockeysville Walmart. I see it happening almost everywhere I go. It's time to follow Anne Arundel's lead — and not just in Maryland. The placards should be discontinued and only tags issued. If someone cannot afford the plates, they should receive them free of charge.

After all, if you can get free cell phones, why not free handicapped tags? My sister-in-law had a placard for her mother but never took advantage of it. Handicapped people need those spots. That's what they are there for. It's time to issue some high priced tickets, and lots of points. This is no better than driving drunk.
