Heading east, Hatem bridge is two lanes

Praise God and all the construction workers on the Hatem Bridge. After three years of one-lane back-ups every night as I left Havre de Grace and headed home to Port Deposit, last week, in the middle of the bridge, two lanes opened up and it was heavenly. The next day, it was clear sailing all the way on two eastbound lanes. Hooray!!

Water Witch Fire Company's annual Firemen's Carnival is running all week through Saturday on the grounds of Woodlawn Station, off Jacob Tome Highway. Rides and stands open each evening around 6 p.m. and there will be a matinee at 2 p.m. Saturday. Bring the kids and support the local fire company.

Happy birthday to Nicholas Powers, who blew out nine candles May 23, and to Coby Foster, who blew out 10 candles May 24. Ceda Perkins, daughter of Bonnie Perkins, added a year to her age May 24 as well.

Janet Jourdan, Dublin, enjoyed birthday wishes May 27.

Welcome to Barbara Reynolds of Warren, Ohio, who traveled here to visit her sister, Patricia Eastridge, of Conowingo. Barb was accompanied by her daughter, Molly. Both Barbara and Pat are members of my Relay for Life Team and they will be walking with me and my family at Elkton High School June 3.

SunFest, the annual family-oriented street festival in Rising Sun, will be held June 4 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Look for food, vendors, entertainment, music and much more.

Sisters "Catsy" Hopkins Schafer and Ruth Hopkins Connelly, both born and bred in Port Deposit, were laid to rest Saturday in Darlington following memorial services at Grace Memorial Episcopal Church. Catsy suffered a fatal stroke at her home in San Diego on Jan. 11 at the age of 96 and her sister, Ruth, died two weeks later at her home in North Carolina on Jan. 24 at the age of 100. Their families gathered from all over the country, including several Hopkins' from Harford and Cecil counties, to pay last respects to two remarkable women in Darlington May 21.

Have a safe and happy Memorial Day this weekend and say a prayer for all the service men and women who died to keep us free.

The VFW Post 8185 will conduct Memorial Day services at two locations Monday. The first service will be held at Harmony Chapel's cemetery on Dr. Jack Road at 10 a.m. and the second service will take place at Memorial Plaza, north end of Marina Park, at 11 a.m. Lunch will be served at noon at the VFW Post 8185, 520 Susquehanna River Road.

Next weekend, 65 Relay for Life teams will walk all night Friday, June 3 on the Elkton High School track to raise money for the American Cancer Society. One of the on-site fundraisers will be a basket bingo in the cafeteria which will start at 10 p.m. Twelve games of bingo will be played and the ticket price will be $10 per person. There will be raffles and door prizes and all proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society. Join the fun!

A Prize Bingo for Kids will be held at Good Shepherd School, 800 Aiken Ave., Perryville, June 4. The ticket cost will be $15 per player at the door. Call Stacy, 443-528-0778, for information or tickets.
