A single-car crash in Howard County claimed the life of a 21-year-old Elkridge woman Sunday, tying up traffic on Route 32 before State Highway Administration officials could clear the scene.

Sarah Marie Stebbins of the 6800 block of Norris Lane in Elkridge was driving east on Route 32 shortly after 4 p.m. when she apparently lost control of her 2002 Nissan Xterra, Howard County police said.

The vehicle was approaching the bridge over Route 29, police said, when it traveled off the left side of the road and hit the guardrail before continuing onto the bridge, where it struck a concrete jersey wall and rolled onto its driver's side.

The driver, who according to a preliminary investigation had been exceeding the speed limit, was alone in the car. She was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the collision, police said.

Eastbound traffic was closed until after 7 p.m. to allow for investigation and cleanup of the scene.
