BDC's Brodie recovering from ice skating injury

Development agency chief hurt but did not break leg

Baltimore Development Corp.'s president, M.J. "Jay" Brodie, said Thursday that he is on the mend after an ice skating injury that has kept him sidelined for much of the past two months.

Brodie, 73, told directors of the economic development agency that he has been under doctor's orders to rest his right leg after it became inflamed in early April. Brodie, an avid skater, said he noticed pain and swelling in his leg after skating twice in late March. He said that he did not fall or break his leg, and that tests uncovered no fractures or torn muscles.

"I'm healing slowly," he said at the beginning of the board's monthly meeting Thursday. "It's a matter of trying to be an athlete at my age. I did a little more ice skating than my leg wanted to do."

Brodie did not appear at the BDC's April board meeting but participated by phone. He said he has been unable to drive but has worked from home and taken part by phone in meetings, including public hearings at which he is called on to testify. In recent weeks, he said, he has been getting to more meetings in person, using crutches. He said he hopes to return to work full time in June.

Brodie said he expects his leg to heal completely and hopes to resume ice skating. "I haven't hung up my skates," he said.
