Preakness ends Pimlico meet, Russell takes jockey title

Shackleford wasn't the only big winner on Saturday at Pimlico Race Course.

Sheldon Russell (jockey), John Rigattieri (trainer) and PTK LLC (owner) won individual titles during Pimlico's eight-week meet that ended Saturday.

Russell captured 26 races to best Julian Pimentel by two for the riding title. Russell, who also won the Laurel Park winter meet title earlier this year, had eight multiple-win days during the 29-day meet that began April 1. Russell, 23, rode Concealed Identity to a 10th-place finish in Saturday’s Preakness.

“It is the best feeling I have had in racing. The roars of the crowd were something I have never experienced," Russell said of his Preakness experience. "I usually watch from the jocks room, so for me to take part in it this year was a dream."

Rigattieri had 11 winners during the meet, topping Dale Capuano, Dane Kobiskie and Mike Trombetta by one.

PTK LLC won the owner standings for the second consecutive year, finishing first 10 times from 48 starters, all with Kobiskie as the trainer.

The Maryland tracks will be silent until the two-week Timonium meet at the Maryland State Fair in August and racing moves to Laurel Park for the winter meet beginning Sept. 10.
