In the previous five games, the Orioles' bullpen had allowed 23 earned runs in 24 1/3 innings, but Sunday, four relievers combined to allow just two hits and a walk over four scoreless innings. … Nationals manager Jim Riggleman was ejected on the second pitch of the game when Bernadina was called out after his bunt single. Plate umpire Todd Tichenor ruled that Bernandina had stepped on the plate while squaring to bunt. … Bench coach Willie Randolph coached third base for a second consecutive game with John Russell dealing with a bad left knee that might require surgery, according to Showalter. There is no timetable for Russell's going back to his third base coaching duties. … Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said Justin Duchscherer (left hip strain) is getting closer to starting to throw again. … Showalter will turn 55 on Monday. … The Orioles lead the all-time series with the Nationals 18-15. … The Orioles are 6-3 in one-run games this season, including 5-0 at home.
