Luke Scott makes Maxim's list of 'dumbest' people in sports

May 12, 2011|By Matt Vensel

Luke Scott has been named to a dubious list by Maxim, which included the Orioles left fielder in its "10 dumbest dumb-asses in sports." The men's magazine, which is still around apparently, cited Scott's love of guns, Ted Nugent and Affliction T-shirts among the reasons for his inclusion on the list.

No mention was made of Scott's take on Barack Obama -- a hot topic on this blog over the past month or so -- but I'm guessing that is what got him on Maxim's radar in the first place. Wouldn't you agree?

"Baseball players are so reliably dumb we should use them for chemical testing," Maxim said of Scott, whom the magazine referred to as "the ass in the outfield" on its dumb-ass list. "Take Orioles left fielder Luke Scott, who fulfills every stereotype of a white baseball player by wearin’ Affliction shirts huntin’ deer when he ain’t takin’ battin’ practice, and rockin’ out to Nickelback."

For the record, Scott isn't dumb at all. His take on Obama and his birth certificate? Well, that one is up for debate.

The list had a few other players of local relevance: Former Redskins linebacker and D.C. radio host LaVar Arrington, Redskins owner Dan Snyder, Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth and Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, whom the magazine called "statutory stupid."

OK, give me your take. Does Scott, who leads the Orioles with six home runs this season, deserve to be on this Maxim list? Should another Baltimore athlete of past or present been considered?
