Let us support those who need mental health care

May 11, 2011

I am a member of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), motivated by the need to support those who suffer in this way. It is a far more common affliction than society readily admits. Some people are diabetic, some have cancer, and some have severe depression or anxiety, or perhaps another mental disorder. They are all human sicknesses, for which we as a caring society would support their cure.

May we kindly recognize this and uplift those who seek health, those who need help, those who require a transition period to heal. On many occasions we have acted to ostracize fellow human beings — sometimes for looking different, sometimes for race, sometimes for just being sick.

Would that we now know better and act to be part of the solution for a more wholesome and healthy society.
