Donald Trump: 'I think gayness is wonderful'

May 09, 2011|By Luke Broadwater

Potential GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump has been in the news lately for comments he made opposing same-sex marriage to the New York Times

"It's like in golf," Trump told the paper. "... a lot of people are switching to these really long putters. Very unattractive. It's weird ... I hate it. I am a traditionalist. I have so many fabulous friends who happen to be gay, but I am a traditionalist."

Last night on his NBC show, "The Celebrity Apprentice," Trump made more comments about homosexuality, which he refers to as "gayness."

Speaking to singer Meat Loaf -- who had broken down in tears several times earlier in the show -- Trump began complimenting the contestant's appearance effusively.

"You look good tonight Meat Loaf," Trump said. "Look at him. Doesn't he? You look good."

"You're a silver-tongued devil," Meat Loaf joked in response.

"He looks rested," Trump continued. "He looks good. So much more handsome."

After making these comments, Trump then apparently felt the need to clarify his sexual orientation for those in the room (and maybe potential voters watching on TV?).

"You know I'm not a gay man, OK?" he said. "I think gayness is wonderful, frankly, but I'm not a gay man."

Trump then continued to comment on Meat Loaf's attractiveness.

"You seem so much better looking," he said.

The whole exchange reminded me of Trump's boasting several weeks ago that he has a "great relationship with 'the blacks.'"

You can watch the episode below. The "I think gayness is wonderful" comment is right after the one hour mark.
