Stevenson, Hood to join Middle Atlantic Conference

Stevenson and Hood, currently members of the Capital Athletic Conference, have accepted invitations to join the Middle Atlantic Conference, effective July 1, 2012. Founded in 1912, the Middle Atlantic Conference, commonly known as the MAC, is an organization of three conferences — Commonwealth, Freedom and Middle Atlantic. Stevenson and Hood will participate in the Commonwealth. With the additions, the MAC will have 18 schools in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and Maryland. The affiliation affects all of Hood's 20 sports and all of Stevenson's 22 except for men's volleyball.

Women's college basketball: Maryland freshman forward Alyssa Thomas, the 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year, has accepted an invitation to attend the USA Women's U19 World Championship Team Trials, USA Basketball announced today. She is one of only 35 players invited. Trials will be May 22-25 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Men's college lacrosse: Tufts senior attackman D.J. Hessler (St. Paul's) was named New England Small College Athletic Conference Player of the Year and was joined on the All-NESCAC first team by Amherst junior attackman-midfielder Evan Redwood (Gilman).

College baseball: Mark Quaranta (Loyola) hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning to lift Mount St. Mary's (14-30) to a 7-4 victory over UMES (5-29) in the first game of a doubleheader. The Mount won the nightcap, 13-2.

Golf: The Breton Bay Country Club pairing of Bill Jenner-Pete DeTemple shot a 4-under-par 34-32—66, and won the 50th annual 2-Man Team championship of the Maryland State Golf Association at the Elkridge Club by two shots.
